We can change who people think we are, or so totes Megamind. Megamind is a 2010 animated superhero comedy film starring the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. It was directed by Tom McGrath. The film takes place during modern times in a fictional city called Metro City.
The film introduces us to Megamind, an alien baby who has been evacuated from his home planet to avoid being sucked into a black hole. His rivalry with Metro Man is introduced at this same time because Metro Man is also being evacuated from his own home planet. Both Megamind’s capsule and Metro Man’s capsule land on earth. Metro Man is brought up in a wealthy home, and everyone loves him. Megamind is brought up by the inmates of The Prison for the Criminally Gifted and is disliked by everyone. As Megamind grows up, he realizes that his purpose in life is to be the bad guy. One day, as Metro Man is wowing the citizens of Metro City, Megamind escapes prison and kidnaps Roxanne. Megamind then attempts to defeat Metro Man and succeeds. With Metro Man out of his way, Megamind takes over Metro City. After a period of uninhibited power, Megamind laments getting rid of Metro Man and decides to create a new super hero. While he is in the process of creating and training the new super hero, Tighten, he becomes romantically involved with Roxanne, the girl he would always kidnap in order to get Metro Man’s attention. Since Roxanne detests Megamind, he must stay disguised to keep the relationship with her. After some time, the new superhero that Megamind creates becomes a bad guy, and Megamind must become the good guy and defeat him.
The film had some very eye pleasing visuals. For example, Roxanne’s hair and Tighten’s hair were amazingly realistic. There is a scene where Roxanne is tied up to the tallest building in Metro City and the wind is blowing. Her hair wisps about in the wind as natural hair would. Tighten has untamed curly hair, and it, too, acts like it would in the real world. There are scenes where he is flying in the sky, and the curls move and act separately from each other. Another visually pleasing element in the film was when Megamind’s Brainbots join together to form the image of Megamind’s head and chew on Tighten. This element was very creative and brings a hearty chuckle to the viewer.
The soundtrack for the film and at least two of the character models were not that good. For example, there are some AC/DC songs used as the bad guy theme songs for Megamind. Though this music was supposed to give Megamind an evil quality, it actually came of as tacky and makes the viewer wonder if the sound designer just got lazy. To top it all off, the Iron Man films already featured songs from this band, which makes their use in Megamind seem like a copout. An example of a not so good character model is Roxanne’s character. She has huge eyes, which makes her look like she has a small jaw and huge forehead. This can be distracting and cause the viewer to even dislike Roxanne, if only for her looks. Another example of bad character design is Tighten’s character. He has a small head with huge cheeks, which is overly distracting. This can lead us to dislike Tighten’s character even more, but this is fine because he is the antagonist.
All in all, I give Megamind 4 out of 5 stars. There are many eye pleasing visuals, especially realistic ones. However, the soundtrack was terrible and some of the character models were not very good. In the end, though, I would definitely like to see this film again.
